Betsy Looney

School Nurse Coordinator

Betsy Looney, RN, BSN, NCSN, is the part-time School Nurse Coordinator for the Office of Catholic Schools, a position she began in August 2020. With over 25 years of experience, Betsy has worked as a school nurse across grades PK-12, including serving as a school nurse and school nurse coordinator in the Richmond Diocese. Prior to joining the Office of Catholic Schools, she spent 20 years at St. Gregory the Great, where she championed the EpiPen program, ensuring that all diocesan schools received stock EpiPens for free.

In 2020, Betsy was honored by the National Association of School Nurses as the Outstanding Private, Independent, Parochial School Nurse, and was also recognized as the Virginia Private School Nurse of the Year. During the summer of 2020, she volunteered to help diocesan school nurses prepare for the upcoming school year and helped successfully open our schools to in person learning during the pandemic.

Betsy serves as the President of the Virginia Association of School Nurses and is a frequent guest speaker at conferences throughout the state, focusing on student health and wellbeing. She is a strong advocate for mental health awareness and regularly educates school nurses on the latest guidelines for chronic and mental health conditions. Betsy also contributed to the development of the diocesan school health guidelines.

In addition, Betsy is a gymnastics judge for the Virginia High School League. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University, where she was captain of the gymnastics team, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Norfolk State University graduating Magna cum laude.  She is a National Board-Certified School Nurse.

Betsy has three children, all of whom attended Richmond Diocese schools. Her youngest is a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where her daughter also works. Her older son, a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, and her husband are both Notre Dame graduates.
